Boxing Back in Brooklyn

10/22/12 15:54 PM

By Saúl Berríos-Thomas Several rising stars continued their ascension on Saturday. Championship boxing returned to Brooklyn for the first time in 81 years as several young stars opened the Barclays Center. The main event of the evening on Showtime “Championship Boxing” from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York was a classic battle between the Puerto Rican rising star and the Mexican veteran in the super lightweight division. Danny Garcia, 24-0, faced off against Erik Morales, 52-8, in a rematch of the March 24 fight, which Garcia won by unanimous decision. Garcia has fast hands that allow him to punch first and get out before the counter comes. Morales is crafty and capitalizes when he gets an opening. At the very end of round three Garcia landed a straight right hand that...

By Saúl Berríos-Thomas There is no substitute for the best fighters fighting each other. That is exactly what happened this weekend. The top fighters from the best divisions met in the ring and sparks flew. The main event on HBO’s “Boxing After Dark” from the Home Depot Center in Carson, California was a meeting of two of the best junior featherweights in the world. Toshiaki Nishioka, 39-4-3, and Nonito Donaire, 29-1, battled for the WBO Junior Featherweight Championship. Nishioka was very tentative not wanting to expose himself to the power of Donaire. The reason Donaire couldn’t just overpower Nishioka is that he knew Nishioka had the advantage in speed and could get to favorable positions before he could respond. Donaire is extremely talented and even against a foe that is...

By Saúl Berríos-Thomas Hope and favor have no impact on skill. Two fighters who have tons of hope from the fans fought, but neither proved that they deserve all of that hope. The superstar is mainly built on the perspective of the fans and these two Mexican heroes went in different directions with the fans. The main event on Showtime’s “Championship Boxing” was a super welterweight clash. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (40-0-1) was challenged by Josesito Lopez (30-4-0-1). Even though Lopez is taller and has the reach advantage Canelo was much larger and more muscular. It was apparent that Lopez had to work to make weight as he had a little fat around his stomach. Canelo has power that is overwhelming even for a fighter in his weight class, and especially against a fighter who has...

A Peek Into the Future

By Saúl Berríos-Thomas Leading up to what could be the best weekend of boxing this year, the weekend before may have stolen the spotlight. There were fantastic fights, fantastic knockouts and even a little bit of controversy. The main event on HBO’s “World Championship Boxing” was a meeting of two American champions fighting for the super middleweight championship of the world. Chad Dawson (31-1), who usually fights at light heavyweight, came down to 168-pounds to fight Andre Ward (25-0) in his hometown. Ward’s trainer Virgil Hunter became something of a father figure in Ward’s life after his late father passed away. A similar bond exists between Dawson and his trainer, John Scully, who first started training Dawson when he was an amateur. Scully motivates Dawson by going for...

By Saúl Berríos-Thomas As I made my through the winding roads of West Virginia I thought about what I was doing in 2003. I was in middle school and I paid little attention to boxing, I was more interested in school dances, because I was just a typical “Pittsburgh Kid”. That was the last time Paul Spadafora was a world Champion or even relevant in the boxing community. I pulled up to the casino, a sea of bright neon lights enticed anyone driving by, where the fight would be. I parked my car as close to the door as I could because I don’t like to walk far, and being an hour early usually gives me the choice of any spot I like. I went inside ordered a soda and found a seat ringside. Sitting next to the ropes that contain these modern-day gladiators, I listened to the bustle of...
