The Duquesne women's volleyball won their match against George Washington 3-1 in an Atlantic-10 matchup on senior day Saturday afternoon at the A.J. Palumbo Center.

The Dukes won their sets over the Colonials 25-20, 25-20 and 25-19, while losing the second set 25-22.  The win improved the Dukes overall record to 22-10 and 9-5 in the A-10.  The win also gave the Dukes an undefeated record at home finishing 13-0 at the A.J. Palumbo Center.

Coach Steve Opperman said that it was great to get a win to close out the regular season.

"[It was] just a great way to close out the regular season," said Opperman.  "I think the kids just fought really hard and the win gives us great momentum going into the A-10 tournament next week."

The Dukes cruised in the first set over visiting Colonials 25-20, but ran into trouble in the second set when they fell to the Colonials late.  The Colonials won a back and forth second set 25-22.

Opperman said that they were not playing their style of volleyball in the second set.

"We just were not executing and not playing good Duquesne volleyball," Opperman said.  "We were being a little bit passive and letting George Washington dictate the way we played."

Junior Allison Foschia added that they were just making rookie mistakes in the second set.

"I think we just needed to fix our silly errors," said Foschia.  "We came out fired up [in the second set] but just came down to stupid points that should not have happened in the first."

The Dukes would rebound coming out of the locker room winning the third set 25-20 and the fourth set 25-19 completing an undefeated season at home.

Before the game, the Dukes held their annual senior day.  The team honored their three graduating seniors Sara Scheirman, Taylor Jones and Ashley Buse, though only Jones played in the game.

Foschia stated that getting the win was a great way to show how much they cared about the seniors.

"It was awesome and it is probably one of the most memorable wins I have been a part of at Duquesne," said Foschia.  "It was a great way to show how much we care about our seniors and how hard we work for them."

With the win, the Dukes locked up the fourth seed in the A-10 volleyball tournament.  The tournament will be held this weekend at the A.J. Palumbo Center.

Opperman stated that it gives the team more confidence to be playing the tournament in place where they have not lost in all season.

"It just gives us more confidence," said Opperman.  "We know we play well at home and if you have not lost all season at home you know you are doing something right.  We are excited to be having the A-10 tournament at home and hopefully we continue that undefeated streak."

Foschia added that playing the tournament at home will be a big boast for the team.

"It's huge and it's definitely going to help so much," Foschia said.  "Playing on your home floor is one of the biggest advantages you can have in any game let alone the tournament so I am really looking forward to it."

The Dukes first game of the A-10 tournament will be a quarterfinal match against the fifth seeded Temple University Owls on Friday at the A.J. Palumbo Center.  The Dukes swept the Owls 3-0 in their only meeting of the season Oct. 12 at the A.J. Palumbo Center.
