The Duquesne Dukes Men's Ice Hockey Team skated away with two wins this weekend, both over the University of Akron, and a hard fought loss to West Virginia.

Friday The Dukes traveled down to Morgantown, West Virginia to take on the Mountaineers in their first of two meetings this season. The game was close with neither team putting the puck in the net throughout the first period.

Duquesne's Dylan Trombetta opened up the scoring early in the second period with a short handed goal at 18:44 after Defenseman Sean Cornell received a holding penalty 10 seconds earlier. The Mountaineers struck next after Chris King took an unassisted shot on Duquesne goalie Dylan Lawrence who stopped forty-seven of forty-nine shots over the course of the entire game.

The game was locked at one a piece till West Virginia player Joe Baker broke the tie with 17:54 left to play in the third period. Duquesne was unable to score for the rest of the game and the win was sealed for The Mountaineers after they netted an empty net goal with twenty-five seconds left to play in the game. The Dukes lost 3-1.

Though a tough loss, the Dukes played hard and they took that motivation back to Ice Castle on Saturday where they faced off against a new opponent: The Akron Zips.

Game one of a two game series kicked off Saturday night in Castle Shannon and the Dukes were fired up from the get-go.

The Dukes knotted up the first two goals of the game, which came from forward Julian Rizza (assisted by number 14 Ryan Maurice) and Brennan Graham (assisted by number 12 Michael Seifert and number 25 Alex Castanzo). The Zips made it a one-score game with a late first period goal by number 9 Lucas Gsellman.

Duquesne's John Reichenbaugh scored unassisted early on the power play with a time of 19:43 after a high sticking call late in the first period by the Zips. Akron's Joseph Haynes made it 3-2 halfway through second period after a shot got passed Duquesne goalie Jack DeStefano. DeStefano finished the game with a save percentage of 0.905. He also saved nineteen of twenty-one shots. Dylan Trombetta scored his first goal of the night on a break away after receiving a pass from Julian Rizza with 2:04 remaining in the second.

A lone goal scored by Trombetta (assisted by Rizza) gave him his second of the game and the fourth for the team that night. The Dukes went on to win 4-2.

The Dukes and the Zips were right back to the grind the next day but it was hardly as close as the night before.

Duquesne scored six goals in the first two periods (three in each) which left the Zips behind six to nothing at the beginning of the third. Akron changed goalies halfway through the second period after Zip Eric Lafferty let in his fifth goal of the night.

Akron defenseman Anthony DiMarco was the lone goal scorer for the Zips when he snuck one by Duquesne goalie Dylan Lawrence. Lawrence saved thirty two of thirty-thirty three Akron shots.

Michael Seifert scored the seventh and final goal of the night with only 58 seconds left to give the Dukes their second win of the weekend and their sixth win of the season.

The Dukes took a tough loss this week to West Virginia but it was shown they could quickly put it behind them with their two dominating wins over Akron.

The team is on the road for both games this weekend as they face IUP and Robert Morris University at their respective rinks.
