Paige Maroney (12) has taken 18 shots on goal this year for the Dukes, but, like many of her teammates, has yet to find the net. The Dukes are 1-1 in Atlantic 10 Conference play but are only 2-8-1 overall.

A gloomy Sunday brought a gloomy outcome for the Duquesne women's soccer team, who fell 1-0 against conference opponent George Washington (4-7-1).

The loss dropped the Dukes' record to 2-8-1, with a 1-1-0 record in conference play.

The Dukes have been shut out six times this season and have only managed to put the ball in the net six times.

George Washington's winning goal came just 1:27 into overtime. Forward Claire Haft managed to chip it past Duquesne goalie Devon Tabata from outside the goal box.

"They were on the outside of the 18 [yard line] and cut back. We accidentally missed a tackle, which was unfortunate, and I got my hand on the ball, and it hit the back of the netting," Tabata explained. "Credit to her for a good shot, but we were unlucky."

The Dukes appeared to have a goal early in the first half, but since a whistle had been blown directly before the shot from junior midfielder Morgan Herbert, it was called off.

Herbert had four shots in the game, two of which were on goal, as the Dukes outshot the Colonials 12-9 throughout regulation.

Herbert was proud of the team.

"We played awesome. I couldn't have asked for a better performance from the team today ... Our defense was outstanding today ... I felt like I had so many opportunities, and things didn't go our way today. But that's soccer," said Herbert, the lone goal scorer in the team's 1-0 win Friday against Richmond.

Coach Zundel was pleased with his team's performance, expecting a better outcome from similar effort the rest of the season.

"We need to keep doing the things that they do well, and they showed that today," Zundel said. "We didn't get the break that we needed, and we got a goal called back. I don't think we have a whole lot to work. We played good soccer, so we just have to keep doing that."

Herbert believes there's one thing the team can improve.

"We need to work on finishing in front of the goal," Herbert said.

Junior forward Paige Maroney agreed.

"I just think we need to work on finishing our chances … We got opportunities. We just need to finish," Maroney said.

The Dukes will continue conference play against St. Bonaventure on Oct. 8 in Olean, N.Y. then return home for games against Saint Louis on Oct. 14 and the home finale against Charlotte on Oct. 16.
